Created in Damascus, Syria, in the 18th century, the floor and fountain were originally part of the interior courtyard, or possibly the main hall, of a traditional Damascene residence. Made from marble, multicoloured limestone and slate, the work reflects the long-standing Syrian tradition of combining white and coloured stone to create sophisticated architectural patterns.

The fountain and patterned floor were designed not only for their beauty but also to provide coolness during the summer, while the fountain held an important symbolic place within the architecture of Syrian homes and palaces.
