In 1929-1930, as his final proposal for the monument to Apollinaire, picasso designed la femme au jardin with the help of his friend, the sculptor Julio Gonzalez. This splendid open figure was inspired, according to John Richardson, by the Ovidian myth of Daphne, who was transformed into laurel tree in order to escape pursuit by the god Apollo.
